Hello readers! This is my review of Miner Disturbance. It is a game on FunOrb, but unlike my other FunOrb reviews this game isn’t multi player.
In Miner Disturbance, you play as Moin(a dwarf miner), who mines volcanoes for gold and other minerals. With that said, the main environment is a volcano. The volcano is called Mount Magros. Inside the volcano, you will encounter a whole bunch of dangers to try to prevent you from your mining. If you are a FunOrb member, you will be able to access the Super Volcano (or SuperCano for short). The SuperCano still has all of the dangers of the normal volcano, but it has even more dangers!
Before you enter either of the volcanoes, you go to the miner market where you can purchase some equipment to help you start off. The SuperCano has more choices of equipment because of the other dangers, but it still has all of the choices as the regular volcano.
Once you enter the volcano, you are right underneath the escape hole. As soon as you jump onto the rope that is coming down from it, you will escape. It’s a good idea to escape, but not when you have that very many points because it doubles your score (which is very useful). With that in mind, you will probably know when it would be a good time to escape.
After a while, you while notice that the graph that is showing the volcano’s activity (it is in the bottom left corner) will be nearly going from side to side! When this is happening, it means that the volcano is nearly going to erupt. When it erupts, you can no longer mine down (unless you want to die of course!), because as soon as the lava touches you, you die. When the volcano is erupting it’s a very good idea to escape because you really can’t do anything once it is, although there is one thing you can do to slow down the eruption… You can try to get all of the volcano’s water over the rocks that the lava is just about to come through and the lava won’t be able to get through for a while! You can do this if you want to try to get more points from above, but I’m not entirely sure how long it will last for because I only did it one time.
The lava isn’t the only danger in the volcanoes though… As you go deeper, you may see a cave with a pair of glowing eyes in it! Sometimes there isn’t anything in them, but every once in a while you will find a Myth in them (a Myth is a creature that lives in the volcano). Myths kill you as soon as they touch you, so you will want to either keep a fair distance from them or kill them! There are a few ways to kill Myths, but the easiest way is to drop a stick of dynamite on them. The more skillful way is to dig right above them and hit the rock you are standing ONE TIME because then it will fall and crush anything that is underneath it. It actually isn’t a very good idea to avoid Myths because in the cave that the Myth was in, there will be a skeleton of the miner that it previously killed. When you walk onto the skeleton, it will give you a random tool, which is really helpful. To help you with killing them by dropping a rock on them, it would be a good idea to buy the hard helmet and the climbing boots as your first tools because with those you will be protected from cave-ins and you will be able to easily kill Myths with the cave-in technique because you will be able to hang onto another rock so you won’t fall.
The SuperCano has Myths in it too, but it also has another creature in and that is… A WALRUS! The walruses are actually pretty easy to kill (unless they are in water) because you can basically kill them with all of the same techniques as you would with a Myth.
The normal volcano and the SuperCano both have poisonous gasses (the poisonous gasses are also highly explosive) and water in them, but the SuperCano also has freezing water and oil in it. The oil will burn when you drop dynamite in it, and the freezing water will freeze you to death unless you have the woolly jumper.
Of course, mining out gems and minerals is actually your main focus in the game because they are what gives you points, so I will list the minerals & gems that are in the game:
Copper
Copper is the most basic of the minerals that are in the game. They are very easy to find and are really close to the top of the mountain, so as you are going down deeper you may as well get a few of them. Copper is worth 100 points each.
Silver
Silver is the intermediate mineral. It isn’t very hard to find because you only have to go a little way down from the copper minerals. Silver is worth 250 points each.
Gold
Gold is the best type of mineral that you can get. They are a bit deeper down than the silver are, but still not very hard to find. Gold is worth 500 points each.
Effluvium
Effluvium is the first gem that you will find. It is a very interesting gem because it is what makes the poisonous gasses, so you have to be pretty careful when mining them. If you have a whole bunch of effluvium that are not covered up by another rock, they constantly be producing poisonous gas. Effluvium are worth 750 points each.
Diamond
Diamonds are one of the best gems that you can get. If you are a free player, they are, but if you are a member there is a gem that gives you the same amount of points as diamonds do. Diamonds are worth 1000 points each, and can really only be found by the bottom of the volcano.
Freezium (members only)
Freezium is the only exclusive gem from the members expansion. Freezium are what causes the freezing water, and as soon as water touches them they will turn the water into freezing water. So, if you have freezing water around you, you’re bound to find some freezium if you look around. Freezium are worth 1000 points each.
All in all, I think that this is a great game, and if you like the genre of it, I recommend that you try it out. I give this game a rating 7/10.
Hello readers! This week our assigned post is to write a poem about plurals (may be tough, but we’ll find out!). The inspiration behind this came from the novel study we are doing about the book called “The Crazy Man“, which is written in free verse, and the grammar work we are doing in Language Arts. So, here is my poem:
If the plural of goose is geese,
Is the plural of choose then cheese?
If the plural of man is men,
Is the plural of ban then ben?
If the plural of foot is feet,
Is the plural of hoot then heet?
That would be sweet!
So, there is my poem. Do you like it? Do you think that I could’ve had better rhymes (it took me a while to get these ones though)? I’d love to hear from you!
Hello readers, as I was surfing on the Internet, I came across something that I thought was really interesting… A new Zelda game scheduled to be released for the Wii in 2010!
I don’t really like Zelda that much, but the new ones have been a lot better than the old ones, so if I get a Wii I may get this game. All that Nintendo has released about it so far is a picture (maybe the cover of the case it comes in?). The picture has a new character on it too; to me she looks like she is made of metal. Obviously, Zelda fans must be very excited!
Apparently, in the storyline of the games the new one is exactly a day after you fight Ganondorf in Twilight Princess, so it probably carries on the story after that. I’m not certain what it is about, but I will keep you up to date with it!
Nintendo also announced a new handheld that they had in production. They said that it was not going to be a spin off of the Nintendo DS, but a new system entirely. They said that it will have enhanced graphics, and that a motion censor will be necessary.
I am very excited about the new Nintendo handheld, and I hope that it turns out really good. So, are you excited about the new handheld or the new Zelda game? I’d love to hear about it!
Happy New Year readers! Have you ever wondered where and when New Years resolutions originated from? Well, if you didn’t, you will know if you read this!
So, new years resolutions are actually WAY older than you probably think. An ancient civilization called The Babylonians (who lived in ”Mesopotamia”) started making New Years resolutions about 4000 years ago! They were a people who lived off of farming, so they counted their years a bit differently then we do nowadays. Their year started in the spring, which is when they would plant their crops, and ended around harvest time. With that in mind, most of the Babylonians probably decided that they would try to do better at harvest time then the last year, and that is how New Year’s resolutions were created.
Only 20% of the people who make a resolution succeed because they planned it correctly. The other 80% probably had a lack of planning to help them through to the end. So, we were asked to come up with 4 resolutions of our own for 2010. At the end of the year, we will see our progress and find out if we are part of the 20% that succeeded, or the 80% that didn’t. So, here are my resolutions:
Personal
My personal goal for the new year is to try to help other people if needed. This would probably also fit under a goal for school (because I would mainly be helping classmates), but I thought that it would go better here.
To help me achieve this goal, I will ask people if they need help with anything. I’m pretty good at blogging, so if our teacher was busy helping somebody else, I’m sure that I would be able to help too.
Classroom & School
My classroom & school goal is to try to help clean up around our class or school grounds whenever I can because there is usually a bit of trash.
To help me achieve this goal, I will pick up trash around our classroom and put it into the garbage can. I will also tell the people who are just leaving it on the floor to put it into the trash can so that there wouldn’t be as much of it to clean up. I could also ask my friends to help me with it so that we could get it done faster.
Local
My local goal is to try to recycle more of the bottles, juice boxes and paper I use to help reduce the waste that goes into our local garbage dump (It used to be called Pigeon Lake, but… Pigeon Mountain gives a better description of what it looks like now).
To help me with this goal, I will of course try to recycle everything I can! Pretty simple, especially because I’m already doing it now, which is another point why 80% of resolutions don’t work out. It’s easier to finish something that you have already started because then you just have to add on to it.
Global
My global goal is to walk or bike to school every single day to help reduce the amount of greenhouse gas emissions that I am putting into the atmosphere.
To help me with this goal, I will wake up earlier in the morning than I do now so I have more time to walk or bike to school, thus removing the point in driving (it’s only a 10 minute walk from my house to my school anyways). Actually, To make this goal even better, I won’t bike to school. Instead, I will only walk because in the process of making a bike, greenhouse gasses are emitted. This goal will probably prove to be pretty easy because I already walk to school a lot.
So, there are my goals. I think that they are all pretty good and that I hope I succeed with them. I probably could’ve made a few more resolutions, but that would’ve made this post a bit too long!
Do you have any New Years resolutions? Did you plan them out like this? If so, leave a comment and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can!
Hello readers! Yesterday it was the National Trivia Day in the United States. I didn’t even know that there was such a day, but apparently there is. So, our class is going to be making posts with 5 Canadian trivia questions on them, and you have to find the answers. I will not say the correct answers as it will spoil it for the other participants, so just write a comment with a possible answer. If you want to go to the original post, it is on Bringing Us Together. Here are my 5 questions:
How many Oceans touch Canada’s coastlines?
What is the leader of Canada called?
What type of measurement is used to measure temperature in Canada?
What was the name of the system of safe passages that allowed American slaves to escape to freedom in Canada?
Hello readers! My blog hasn’t been very active with posts for the past 2 weeks because it was our winter break time. We didn’t have to go to school for about 16 days! A lot of things happened that were quite interesting in my winter break, so I am going to select my favourite memories and write about them!
For the first few days of my break I didn’t really do much except go to the pool with one of my friends. It started to get interesting around Christmas day because I got some presents that I really wanted (and some that I wanted but haven’t gotten yet because my dad wasn’t sure if I wanted them). For Christmas I got the new video game Kingdom Hearts: 358/2 Days and a T-shirt with penguins on it. The gifts yet to come are all 7 of the Harry Potter books in a boxed set and a new bike.
My friend Hayden had gotten a new computer for Christmas, so we had a sleep over (and we stayed up on the computer until like… 1:00 in the morning playing a game called Combat Arms). It was really fun. The next day we went to see the new movie Sherlock Holmes, which actually wasn’t as boring as I thought it would be, being a movie about a detective and all.
My favourite part of my break was probably yesterday, when I went skiing at Mount Washington with my mom. I haven’t gone skiing for 4 years now, but once I got up there and started moving around it all came back to me really easily (except for turning when I should have, but that will come up more later). I went down some of the runs and I was doing pretty good, so my mom took wanted to take me to a run that I haven’t gone down before called the Gully. I didn’t like it all though, because I took 2 epic bails on it since I was going too fast. The first time I was trying to turn, but I accidentally crossed my skis so I sort of tripped over them and then I went tumbling down the hill for a while. One of my gloves had flown off, and one of the skis had become unattached from my boot but other than that I was fine. My second bail was on the same run, but not from the same reason. I was going down way too fast, so if I didn’t fall I probably would’ve reached the trees. I kind of made myself fall that time though, so I really wouldn’t consider it a bail.
Well readers, these are the highlights of my winter break. You probably wouldn’t want to hear about the rest of it though because I didn’t really do anything else except for playing video games and staying up late (the stuff most people probably did).
So, what did you do for your winter break? did you go on some crazy trips like I did? Leave a comment and I’ll get back to you as soon as I can.
Hello readers, this is just a (really) short post to tell you that I was nominated for the Edublog awards 2009 under the category of “best student blog”. My teacher from last year Ms. Smith nominated me, and so did a person named Miguel. The results haven’t been posted on the award site yet, so I still may be able to win (although voting closed yesterday).
I didn’t win, but I was nominated anyways so I’m happy with the results .
Hello readers! Its nearly that time of the year again when the man in the red and white suit flies around the world giving gifts to all! Christmas is my favourite holiday ever, but not only because of the gifts. The time you spend with your family and friends is what Christmas is all about!
Although spending time with your family when you are on a break from school may sound boring, it can be really fun, like when you get a gift that the whole family can play at once. I remember one year that we got some sort of game that involved dropping marbles into this tube-like thing with sticks in it to try to get them to stay up. I think that when they hit the bottom you had to start all over again; I can’t really remember though because I haven’t played it in a long time. Board games are really fun to play with your family during holidays because you work together with your family to play most of them.
A fun thing to do over your Christmas break is to go skiing (if there is a skiing mountain by where you live). The skiing hill where I live is called Mt. Washington (I’m not sure why it is called that though). There are a whole bunch of different tracks to go down and everything. The last time I went skiing was 2 years ago, but it isn’t something you forget how to do soif I went this year I would probably still be really good.
Another great thing about Christmas is the food! I love to help make the food (and eat it too). My favourite kind of food to eat for Christmas dinner is spaghetti with meat sauce. My dad and I make really good meat sauce with a whole bunch of ingredients in it. Its the seasoning that makes it taste good though .
Hello readers! This week our class has been working with Pivot to create a break dancing video. Here is my finished video.
It was really fun for me to make another Pivot break dancing video (I also did one last year with my class). When we were asked to find a Christmas picture, no one really knew why but after a few days the teacher revealed to us that we were going to have a Pivot dance off.
It takes quite a while to make a Pivot video like this because making the stick man do all of the movements takes a really long time (especially if you want it to be good). Most of the time you have to do it frame by frame to make it look good. After we had gotten the Pivot animation part done, we had to go into Windows Movie Maker to edit it and add music. Picking the music was pretty fun too because you got to listen to songs until you found one you liked. I didn’t really like any of the techno/electro songs that were on the site where we downloaded the music from so I searched for a different genre of music that I personally think sounds pretty good called “trance”. It is a little bit like techno, but it doesn’t sound quite like it either.
The idea to have another break dancing competition originated from The Ripple Effect, our class blog. Huzzah! is also making Pivot break dancing videos too, so you should visit their class blog to see their videos too!
Hi readers! Today I am going to review a moderately fun video game for the Nintendo DS called Harvest Moon. Harvest Moon is also on a whole bunch of other consoles, but this was the first version of it to be released on the DS.
Harvest Moon is a farming game. You own your own farm and have to tend your crops and feed your animals. You can have a whole bunch of different animals and crops which is really good except for the fact that the animals cost a lot of money to buy. You make your money by selling the food that you have harvested from your crops and by selling eggs and milk from cows and chickens. You can also have a cat (which is on your farm by default). Although it doesn’t do much its pretty cute, and I don’t think there is a way to get rid of it.
You don’t only buy and sell crops and animals, you are also trying to get your character married (which is a lot harder than it sounds because sometimes a girl will like you and then they might not the next day). In the game there are a few different people who you can try to marry. Each of the girls that you can marry have very different personalities and some of them don’t like certain gifts that another girl does. I think that when I was trying to get my character married I was trying to marry the girl that likes jewelry (because it’s quite easy to get), but then one day she didn’t really like me for some reason so I didn’t try to bother to get her to like me again.
Here are some of the types of animals that you can get:
Cow
Cows are pretty easy to take care of. If you want them to be able to have a calf, then you will have to keep them healthy. You also have to give your animals sponge bathes so that they are clean. Calves look really cute, but I don’t think that you can get milk from them until they are fully grown. Once a new animal is born you get to name it, so I whenever I do I always try to think of a name that a cow could have, and not just a name that I think is cool because it may be a very unusual name for a cow.
Sheep
Sheeps are also quite easy to take care of, but unlike a cow you have to keep them really clean so that they produce good wool. If your sheep is really clean, it can give you a golden wool which is worth a lot of money. After you shear the sheep, you can’t shear them again for a while because they don’t have any wool since you have already sheared it. I think that the baby sheep were also quite cute, but like the calves you can’t do anything with them until they are fully grown. Sheep eat hay which you can stock up in this big metal building, and they can be in the same barn as a cow.
Chicken
Chickens give you eggs which I’m pretty sure you can sell for a bit of money. Its good to have a bit of chickens though so that you can have a whole bunch of eggs at a time. They have to have a chicken coop of their own, so you can’t have them in the same barn as a cow. If you don’t take the egg out of where they are laid, I think that it will hatch (I can’t remember though, I think for it to hatch you either have to leave it there or take it and put it in the incubator). The chicks are a bright yellow and really cute, but again they can’t do anything until they are fully grown. I think you have to feed them bird feed which you can buy from the store or order off the phone.
Duck
I don’t think that the ducks do anything at all. I can’t even remember if you can sell their eggs or not either. Before you can have ducks, you have to have a pond on your pool so that they can swim around in it. Ducks can be in the same coop as a chicken, so you don’t have to separately store them (its always good if you don’t have to do that so that you save money on buying a new building). Even though I don’t think that a duck does anything, I would always have a lot of them because ducks are one of my favourite animals.
You have to store your animals in barns which cost money to build. On my farm, I think that I had 2 barns and 2 chicken coops (I had a lot of animals). It costs quite a bit of money to build a whole bunch of buildings, but you can store more animals when you do so its good to have them. You also have to have a lot of food so that you can keep your animals from starving. IF you don’t feed them I think that they can eventually die, which obviously isn’t a good thing. To keep them from getting sick you have to buy them medicine. Its very important that you keep a pregnant cow or sheep very healthy because when they are pregnant I think that they can get sick very easily.
I think that this game is quite fun, and if you are a fan of them other Harvest Moon games you should try out this one. Also, if you have the version that was for the Game Boy Advance, I think that you could insert it into the GBA slot of your DS and go over to the town from them GBA version. I also think that you could marry a girl from that version, but I can’t quite remember what it said. I give this game a rating of 6.5/10.
